Myrtaciphyllum undulatum

Angiospermae - Myrtales - Myrtaceae

Taxonomy
Myrtaciphyllum undulatum was named by Christophel and Lys (1986) [Specimen 1731: one mummified leaf (A1731) and one cuticle slide (C1731). Description of holotype: The holotype (A1731) was collected from Lens B at Site II of the Alcoa Brown Coal Mine (Christophel et al. 1987) in 1985. The leaf is 4.51 cm long by 1.6 cm wide. It is lanceolate, symmetrical and has an attenuate apex (apex angle = 50°) and an acute base (base angle = 68°). The secondary veins are straight, the average secondary vein angle 65°. The leaf has an ISI = 1 (see character set for explanation). The cuticle is typical for the species. The stomates are located on the abaxial surface and most frequently have three subsidiary cells. The average length of stomates = 23.9 µm (mean L / W = 1.38) and the SI = 18.3. Epidermal cell walls are highly undulate (character scored as 4 in numerical analysis). Lid cells are present with an average L/W ratio of 0.61. Large multicellular hair bases are present on both leaf surfaces and range from 40 to 60 µm in diameter.]. Its type specimen is Holotype: Specimen 1731, housed in the Palaeobotany Collection, Botany Department, Adelaide University., a leaf (Cuticle), and it is a compression fossil. It is the type species of Myrtaciphyllum.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
D. C. Christophel and S. D. Lys 1986Architectural features: leaf shape: elliptic, ovate or obovate, rarely falcate. Size range: 1.1-8.3 cm long (mean = 3.2 cm) by 0.5-4.3 cm wide (mean = 1.6). Leap tip: acute or attenuate, rarely obtuse. Cuticular features: stomata1 complex anomocytic, with between two and five subsidiary cells, most commonly three. Mean SI = 22.5. Epidermal cell walls of both abaxial and adaxial epidermis highly undulate with some thickening in the ridges and fine striations on the cell surface. Simple hairs present on both upper and lower epidermis, hair bases thickened with basal cells modified radially. Large multicellular hair bases present on the abaxial epidermis and occasionally on the adaxial epidermis (mean 70 m in diam.). Lid cells present on both abaxial and adaxial leaf surface. Lid cells with sinus S-shaped, with or without beaded thickenings and lying perpendicular to the long axis of the cells.
