Myrtaciphyllum douglasii

Angiospermae - Myrtales - Myrtaceae

Taxonomy
Myrtaciphyllum douglasii was named by Christophel and Lys (1986) [Holotype: one mummified leaf (A2672) and one cuticle slide (C2672). Description of holotype: The holotype (A2672) was collected from Lens B at Site I1 of the Alcoa Anglesea Brown Coal Mine (Christophel et al. 1986) in 1985. The leaf is 7.35 cm long by 2.22 cm wide. It is narrow elliptic with an acute base (base angle = 67°). The secondary veins are straight, the average secondary vein angle = 56°. The leaf has an IS1 = 1 (see above). The cuticle is typical for the species (Figs 12 and 13) with the most common subsidiary number being four. The average length of stomates=27.2 µm (mean L/W= 1.23) and the SI= 17.2. The epidermal cells are straight-sided. Lid cells are absent, as are trichomes. Hydathodes are present and scattered with average length = 37.5 µm.]. Its type specimen is Holotype: Specimen 2672, housed in the Palaeobotany Collection, Botany Department, Adelaide University., a leaf (Cuticle), and it is a compression fossil.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
D. C. Christophel and S. D. Lys 1986Architectural features: leaf shape: elliptic, ovate or obovate, occasionally falcate. Size range: 1.8 - 8.4 cm long (mean= 4.8 cm) by 0.4 - 4.7 cm wide (mean= 2.4 cm). Leaf tip: acute or obtuse, rarely attenuate. Cuticular features: stomata1 complex anomocytic with three to six subsidiary cells, most commonly four. Mean SI= 20.5. Epidermal cell walls of both surfaces are
straight (non-undulate) and without surface ornamentation. Adaxial epidermal cells are isodiametric and noticeably larger than abaxial epidermal cells (at least 1 a5 times greater average area). Cuticles glabrous and lacking lid cells. Hydathodes are present on abaxial epidermis and scattered.
