Taxonomy
Proexenocrinus was named by Strimple and McGinnis (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Proexenocrinus inyoensis.

It was assigned to Xenocrinidae by Strimple and McGinnis (1972); to Rhodocrinitidae by Ausich (1986) and Ausich (1998); to Diplobathrida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tanaocrinidae by Webster (2006).
