Nothofagus maideni
Taxonomy
Nothofagus maideni was named by Pole et al. (1993) [A topotype was chosen from among the recently collected Berwick Quarry specimens because Deane's specimens could not be relocated.
Specimens Examined: Fagus maideni Deane plate VII, Fig. 10.
Fagus luehmanni Deane plate VII, Figs 5,6,7, 9.
Atherosperma berwickense Deane plate VII, Figs 1,2,3.
Referred specimens: SB213, 215, 219, 221, 229 ,232, 240, 246, 247, 249, 256, 257, 283, 289, 291, 306, 323, 324, 802.]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Neotype: 33248, housed in the Department of Plant Science, University of Tasmania., a leaf (Cuticle), and it is a compression fossil.

Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
M. S. Pole et al. 1993 | Leaf size extremely variable. Upper epidermal cells thinly cutinised, irregular, with slightly sinuous walls. Venous cells heavily cutinised and more regularly arranged. Trichome bases with 1-4 foot cells common over and between veins, becoming more frequent and complex toward leaf margin. Foot cell, or cells in combination, circular, thickened, with small basal cells. Trichomes short (about 30 pm), non-glandular, unicellular, tapering to acute apex. Glandular trichome bases occur rarely. Lower epidermal cells very thinly cutinised, irregular, with straight walls. Three trichome types present, all mainly over veins.
Two types are the same as those on upper epidermis. The third is unicellular, developed from a single epidermal cell which is circular, heavily cutinised and surrounded by small, heavily cutinised basal cells. Trichomes long (about 300 pm), unicellular, non-glandular, thin-walled and tapering to an acute apex. |
