Taxonomy
Rhodomyrtus australis was named by Hill and Merrifield (1993) [Holotype, only specimen observed.]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: WAM P.88.86A, stored in the Western Australian Museum., a leaf, and it is an impression. Its type locality is West Dale, which is in an Eocene/Oligocene channel lag siltstone/sandstone in Australia.

R. S. Hill and H. E. Merrifield 1993Leaf about 11 cm long, about 3.7 cm wide, venation perfect suprabasal acrodromous. Stomates restricted to one leaf surface. On stomatiferous surface stomates arranged at random, with two or three large subsidiary cells in an anomocytic arrangement, superficial, almost always plugged. Epidermal cells over veins straight walled, very long and narrow. Unicellular trichome bases, with the basal cell being embedded in the epidermis, but the base clearly extending over surrounding cells are common on stomatiferous surface and over veins on non-stomatiferous surface. Trichomes not preserved.
