Taxonomy
Acsmithia grandiflora was named by Carpenter and Buchanan (1993) [Type locality: Cethana, Tasmania. Specimens examined: C-736,737.]. It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: C-736, housed in the Department of Plant Science, University of Tasmania., a fertile axis. Its type locality is Cethana Dam, which is in an Oligocene lagoonal siltstone/sandstone in Australia.

R. J. Carpenter and A. M. Buchanan 1993Inflorescence at least two flowered, apparently a panicle. Flowers bisexual, apparently actinomorphic, 5 mm in diameter. Pedicels slender, 7-9 mm long. Calyx ?4 lobed, campanulate, lobes at least 5 mm long and 1 mm wide, apparently glabrous, distal margins inrolled. Petals absent. Stamens at least 2 (only 2 anthers visible), filaments 7 mm long, anthers ovoid, 1 mm long, dorsifixed, dehiscing by at least one longitudinal slit, exsert. Carpels 4-5, superior, erect, apparently free (certainly so in the upper part), 4 mm long and 3 mm wide at the base, bulbous and tapered to the style, styles filiform, at least 6 mm long.
