Dolatocrinus was named by Lyon (1857) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi D Give]. It is the type genus of Dolatocrinidae.

It was assigned to Melocrinidae by Goldring (1936); to Dolatocrinidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978); and to Monobathrida by Sepkoski (2002).
