Libocedrus balfourensis was named by Paull and Hill (2009) [Specimens examined (41). B-018–027, 111, 112, 136–140, 328–331, 571, 572, 575, 576, 578–580, 750–754, 821, 832, 833– 837, 839.]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: B-750 stored in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the University of Adelaide, South Australia., a sterile axis (Cuticle), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Balfour, which is in an Oligocene/Miocene terrestrial horizon in Australia.

Hill 2009Lateral leaves larger than facial, bilaterally flattened, loosely to tightly imbricate, fused for about one-third their length, ventral surface convex, dorsal surface concave, bases slightly papillate, margins entire, well-defined band of epidermal cells between stomatal area and leaf margin. Facial leaves with frilled margins, leaf apices reaching leaf pair above. Amphistomatic. Numerous closely packed stomata in well-defined depressions in central section of dorsal leaf surface, fewer on ventral leaf surfaces. Internal epidermal cell surface with slightly coarse-grained texture. Exposed areas often containing small nodules. Florin rings high ridged, lobed, and surrounded by numerous, often round, papillae.
