Trogonophis darelbeidae was named by Bailon (2000). Its type specimen is AaO 2117, INSAP, Rabat, Morocco, a mandible (incomplete right dental), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ahl al Oughlam - general, which is in a Pliocene coastal limestone/conglomerate in Morocco.
