Taxonomy
Coluber scalaris was named by Schinz (1822). It is extant. It is the type species of Rhinechis.

It was recombined as Elaphe scalaris by Mertens and Müller (1928); it was recombined as Rhinechis scalaris by Utiger et al. (2002).
