Polypeltes was named by Angelin (1878) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Polypeltidae.

It was assigned to Polypeltidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978); and to Monobathrida by Sepkoski (2002).
