Taxonomy
Apatosaurus yahnahpin was named by Filla and Redman (1994). Its type specimen is TATE 001, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bertha Quarry, Como Bluff, which is in a Kimmeridgian/Tithonian levee sandstone in the Morrison Formation of Wyoming.

It was recombined as Eobrontosaurus yahnahpin by Bakker (1998), Mateus (2006), Tschopp and Mateus (2013) and Tschopp and Mateus (2013); it was recombined as Brontosaurus yahnahpin by Tschopp et al. (2015) and Tschopp et al. (2019).

B. J. Filla and P. D. Redman 1994Closest to A. excelsus but differs in the reten­tion of the following primitive characters: a greatly ex­ panded upper scapula blade, a scapula spine (deltoid ridge) that is perpendicular to the long axis of the scapula blade, a coracoid that is shallow and not enlarged ventrally, and a humerus with a very narrow shaft. An addi­tional primitive character may be the retention of very long cervical ribs.
