Nothofagus peduncularis was named by Hill (1991) [Specimenes examined: LRR1-058, 106, 421, 717, 988, 997, 998, 1084-1090, 1371-1377, 1381-1384, 1481, 1954.]. It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is LRR1-1954, a seed/fruit (Cupule). Its type locality is Little Rapid River 1, which is in an Oligocene fluvial-lacustrine mudstone in Australia.

R. S. Hill 1991Cupule 2-valved, valves 10 mm long (range 8-13 mm), 10 mm wide (range 7-13 mm). Peduncle up to 10 mm long, sometimes slightly curved, broad at attachment to cupule, narrowing to base. Cupule valves slightly woody at base, membranous at apex appressed to one another, free for approximately one-third of their length. Three membranous lamellae on each cupule valve. Cupule valves minutely pubescent, with conical unicellular trichomes and solitary unicellular trichome type C frequent.
