Amphipora was named by Schulz (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is the type genus of Amphiporidae.

It was assigned to Stromatoporoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Amphiporidae by Stearn et al. (1999) and Stearn (2015).
