Elaphrus clairvillii was named by Kirby (1837). It is extant.

It was recombined as Elaphrus (Neoelaphrus) clairvillei by Bousquet (2012); it was corrected as Elaphrus clairvillei by Pierce (1948), Cong and Ashworth (1996), Cong et al. (1996) and Ashworth and Nelson (2014).
