Latimeria was named by Smith (1939). It is extant. It is the type genus of Latimeriidae, Latimeriinae.
It was assigned to Latimeriidae by Forey (1998), Schultze (2004), Graf (2012) and Dutel et al. (2012); and to Latimeriinae by Ferrante and Cavin (2023).
