Celonocrinus was named by Lane and Webster (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-l P Wc]. Its type is Celonocrinus expansus.

It was assigned to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stellarocrinidae by Webster and Lane (1967), Webster and Lane (1987) and Mao et al. (2018).
