Megapleuron was named by Gaudry (1881). It is not extant. Its type is Megapleuron rochei.

It was synonymized subjectively with Sagenodus by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Speonesydrionina by Campbell and Barwick (1990); and to Dipnoi by Schultze (2004).
