Codiacrinus was named by Schultze (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: D l D Eife]. It is the type genus of Codiacrininae, Codiacrinidae, Codiacrinacea.

It was assigned to Codiacrininae by Ubaghs et al. (1978); and to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002).
