Eusaurosphargis dalsassoi

Reptilia - Helveticosauridae

Taxonomy
Eusaurosphargis dalsassoi was named by Nosotti and Rieppel (2003) [Skull characterized by relatively small and rounded upper temporal fenestrae; posterior margin of skull table straight or only weakly concave; pineal foramen located at the level of the anterior margin of the upper temporal fenestrae; dentition homodont, tooth crowns leaf shaped, with distinct lingual heel; vertebral centra platycelous or weakly amphicoelous; cervical and anterior caudal vertebrae with triangular neural spines; dorsal vertebrae with low neural spine and distinctly elongate transverse processes, located at anterior end of vertebra and trending in an anterolateral direction; prezygapophyses of dorsal vertebrae emerging from a crest running along the anterior surface of the transverse processes; anterior dorsal ribs characterized by distinct, fan-shaped uncinate processes (convergent in Paraplacodus), and not expanded distally, small and oblong, oval or elliptical osteoderms with irregular margins and a pitted surface; osteoderms arranged in rows, probably associated with the uncinate processes of the anterior dorsal ribs, and capping the neural spines of the vertebrae (convergent in Placodus).]. Its type specimen is BES SC 390, a partial skeleton (Disarticulated but associated skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Besano (Scisti bituminosi), which is in an Anisian/Ladinian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal dolomite/shale in the Besano Formation of Italy.
