Exocrinus was named by Strimple (1949) [Sepkoski's age data: C Bash P Sakm]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Exocrinidae.

It was assigned to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Exocrinidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978) and Pabian and Rushlau (2002).
