Iguanodon galvensis

Reptilia

Taxonomy
Iguanodon galvensis was named by Verdú et al. (2015). Its type specimen is MAP-4787, a partial skeleton (premaxilla, dentary, postorbital, quadrate, maxillary teeth, atlas arch and cervical remains, a sacral vertebra, ribs, coracoid, scapula, part of both pubis, pa), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is San Cristóbal 1, Galve (SC-1), which is in a Barremian fluvial claystone in the Camarillas Formation of Spain.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
F. J. Verdú et al. 2015Dentary with dorsal margin close to the symphyseal region with a short, abrupt and marked convexity (Fig. 5). Relatively large, rounded expansion of the distal end of the ischium compared to the proximal end (ratio 0.45–0.50).
F. J. Verdú et al. 2021Unique combination of characteristics present in large specimens of I. galvensis but not in those of I. bernissartensis; autapomorphies are indicated with an asterisk:(1) a short vertical buttress on the quadrate (length of vertical buttress/total length of quadrate <0.27 in SC-8-111); (2) a well-developed embayment on the rostral margin of the frontal process in the postorbital; (3) middle-to-posterior dorsal vertebrae centra moderately compressed between the articular faces and (4) without ventral keel; (5) pollex straight, but with a curving medial margin; (6) *a prominent tuberosity (like a bump) on the articular surface of the iliac peduncle of the ischium; (7) a stepped ischiatic peduncle on the lateral face of ilium; (8) shaft of the ischium ‘D-shaped’ in cross section close to (9) the expanded and rounded distal end, and (10) relatively large compared to the proximal end (ratio 0.45–0.50); (11) *a rugose and inflated ridge on the lateral side of the femur shaft near to the lateral condyle, and (12) the distal end as wide as or wider than the proximal. Additional unique combination of characteristics present in immature specimens of I. galvensis (perinates/juveniles), which might be susceptible to ontogenetic variation, but not in large specimens of I. bernissartensis: (1) quadrate straight for much of its dorsoventral length, but curved caudally near its dorsal end; (2) *dentary with dorsal margin close to the symphyseal region with a short, abrupt, and marked convexity; (3) rostral tip raised above the ventral margin of the dentary, associated with an (4) oblique symphysis in medial view; (5) coronoid process caudally inclined.
