It was reranked as the subfamily Hippotheriinae by Cope (1889); it was corrected as Hippotheriini by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Prado and Alberdi (1996).
It was assigned to Palaeotheriidae by Cope (1889); and to Equinae by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Prado and Alberdi (1996).
