Taxonomy
Cantabrotherium was named by Casanova-Cladellas and Santafe-Llopis (1987). Its type is Cantabrotherium truyolsi.

It was assigned to Palaeotheriidae by Prothero and Schoch (1989) and Cuesta (1993).
