Taxonomy
Proetus macrocephalus was named by Hall (1861). It is the type species of Monodechenella.

It was recombined as Dechenella macrocephala by Richter and Richter (1926); it was recombined as Dechenella (Monodechenella) macrocephala by Stumm (1953); it was recombined as Dechenella macrocephalus by Mayer (1989); it was recombined as Monodechenella macrocephala by Lieberman (1994) and Jell and Adrain (2002); it was recombined as Monodechenella macrocephalus by Bonelli et al. (2006).
