Callipleura was named by Cooper (1942) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-l Sepkoski's reference number: 25]. Its type is Rhynchospira nobilis.

It was assigned to Machaerariidae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
