Cretirhynchia cuneiformis was named by Pettitt (1950). Its type specimen is B.M. [B.B. 9990] and is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Woodwardirhynchia.
It was recombined as Woodwardirhynchia cuneiformis by Simon and Owen (2001) and Simon (2005).
