Hypocrinus was named by Beyrich (1862) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Hypocrinus schneideri.

It was assigned to Codiacrininae by Lane (1967); to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Codiacrinidae by Webster and Webster (2012).
