Porpoceras planiventer was named by Guex (1972). Its type specimen is Musée d'Histoire Naturelle de Genève G77, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Le Clapier, bed 21, which is in a Bifrons carbonate marl in France.
