Merocrinus was named by Walcott (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde O Cara-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Merocrinidae.

It was assigned to Merocrinidae by Ausich (1998); and to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002).
