Taxonomy
Ammonites hircinus was named by Schlotheim (1820). It is the type species of Pleurolytoceras.

It was recombined as Pachylytoceras hircinum by Schulbert (2001); it was recombined as Pleurolytoceras hircinum by Hyatt (1900) and Whicher et al. (2023).
