Nothofagus palustris was named by Carpenter et al. (2014) [Additional specimens examined in detail: Leaves on lignite blocks with prepared cuticles; OU32161, OU33335, OU33337, OU33338, OU33339, OU33640, OU33641, OU33340, OU33642, OU33341. Cleared leaf remains with prepared cuticles; OU32103, OU32138, OU32141, OU32166. Cleared leaf remains; OU32142, OU32154, OU32160. Prepared cuticles from other specimens; OU32158, OU32101, OU33307.]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Holotype: OU32159, Geology Museum, University of Otago, Dunedin, NZ, a leaf (Cuticle), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is F45/f0394, middle Gore Lignite Measure, Newvale Mine, which is in an Oligocene/Miocene mire/swamp lignite in New Zealand.

R. J. Carpenter et al. 2014Leaves regularly serrate, with one or two teeth per secondary vein. Whitish, scaly wax present on leaf surface. Abaxial surface variably papillate. Stomata variably sized, largely confined to small areoles. Glandular trichome bases and hydathodes common on veins of abaxial surface; simple trichomes present on major veins and near leaf margin. Adaxial epidermal cells within areoles of variable size, usually larger than surrounding venous cells.
