Taxonomy
Nautilus impendens was named by Crick (1898). Its type specimen is BMNH C.4502, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bradford Abbas, Hyperlioceras bed, which is in a Discites carbonate limestone in the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Cenoceras impendens by Kummel (1956).
