Sostronocrinus was named by Strimple and McGinnis (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-l Sepkoski's reference number: 906]. It is not extant. Its type is Sostronocrinus superbus.
It was assigned to Scytalocrinidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978); to Rutkowskicrinidae by McIntosh (2001); to Sostronocrinidae by Lane et al. (2001); and to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002).
