Sphaerocrinus was named by Roemer (1851) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Sphaerocrinidae.

It was assigned to Sphaerocrinidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978); and to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002).
