Sonninia playfordi was named by Arkell (1954). Its type specimen is UWA 33869, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Well at 964202, which is in a Bajocian shallow subtidal limestone in the Newmarracarra Limestone Formation of Australia.
It was recombined as Sonninia (Euhoploceras) playfordi by Hall (1989).
