Taxonomy
Ammonites hippocrepis was named by DeKay (1828) [DISTRIBUTION: Campanian; Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plain, Western Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Scaphites (Scaphites) hippocrepis by Kennedy (1986), Cobban and Kennedy (1992), Kennedy and Cobban (1993), Kennedy et al. (1997) and Szives (2007); it was recombined as Scaphites hippocrepis by Anderson (1958) and Ifrim et al. (2013).

Synonyms
  • Scaphites nanclasi was named by Coquand (1859). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lavalette (Charente), which is in a Campanian carbonate carbonate in France.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Scaphites (Scaphites) hippocrepis by Kennedy (1986).
