Harpoceras lairense was named by Waagen (1875).

It was recombined as Sublunuloceras lairense by Jeannet (1951); it was recombined as Hecticoceras (Sublunuloceras) lairense by Parent (2006); it was recombined as Hecticoceras lairense by Parent and Garrido (2015).
