Antarctosuchus was named by Sidor et al. (2014). Its type is Antarctosuchus polyodon. It was considered monophyletic by Sidor et al. (2014).

It was assigned to Capitosauroidea by Sidor et al. (2014).

Sidor et al. 2014Capitosaurian temnospondyl autapomorphic in its possession of a midline depression at the junction of the frontals and nasals as well as small and numerous maxillary, palatine, and ectopterygoid dentitions (at least 85 maxillary teeth). Possesses the following unique combination of characters: parachoanal tooth row that extends far posterior to the choana, lacrimal long relative to skull length, with subparallel medial and lateral margins; occipital condyles large and set close to the midline; post-temporal fenestrae relatively narrow.
