Apiocrinites was named by Miller (1821) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath K Albi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Encrinites parkinsoni. It is the type genus of Apiocrinitidae.

It was assigned to Apiocrinidae by Rasmussen (1961); to Millericrinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Apiocrinitidae by Jäger (2010), Hess and Gale (2010), Hess and Messing (2011) and Hess (2012).
