Hemicrinus was named by Orbigny (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l K Albi Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. Its type is Hemicrinus astierianus. It is the type genus of Hemicrinidae.
It was assigned to Hemicrinidae by Rasmussen (1961); to Cyrtocrinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sclerocrinidae by Hess and Messing (2011).
