Bathycrinus was named by Thomson (1872) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Bathycrinidae, Bathycrininae.

It was assigned to Bathycrinidae by Rasmussen (1961); to Bourgueticrinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bathycrininae by Hess and Messing (2011).
