Spongotrochus was named by Haeckel (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Spongodiscidae by De Wever et al. (2001), Sharma and Takahashi (2007).
