Taxonomy
Balanocrinus was named by Agassiz (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori-u K Haut]. It is not extant. Its type is Pentacrinites subteres. It is the type genus of Balanocrininae.

It was reranked as Pentacrinus (Balanocrinus) by Oppenheim (1902).

It was assigned to Pentacrinus by Oppenheim (1902); to Isocrinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Balanocrininae by Jäger (1985) and Hess and Gale (2010).
