Cenocrinus was named by Thomson (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Isis asteria.

It was assigned to Isocrinidae by Donovan et al. (1993); to Isselicrinidae by Donovan (1994); to Isocrinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Diplocrininae by Hess and Messing (2011).
