Mesembrioxylon was named by Seward (1919). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Podocarpoxylon woburnense.

It was assigned to Podocarpaceae by Seward (1919), Andrews (1970), Lakhanpal et al. (1976) and Srivastava (1991).
