Moenocrinus was named by Hildebrand (1926) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-l Sepkoski's reference number: 864]. Its type is Moenocrinus deeckei.

It was assigned to Isocrinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Holocrinidae by Hess and Messing (2011).
