Conometra was named by Gislen (1924) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo T Mi]. Its type is Alecto alticeps. It is the type genus of Conometridae.

It was reranked as Glenotremites (Conometra) by Rosenkrantz (1945).

It was assigned to Glenotremites by Rosenkrantz (1945); to Comatulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Conometridae by Eagle (2007) and Hess and Messing (2011).
