Somphocrinus was named by Peck (1943) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 980]. It is not extant. Its type is Somphocrinus mexicanus. It is the type genus of Somphocrinidae.
It was assigned to Roveacrinidae by Peck (1943); to Roveacrinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Somphocrinidae by Hess and Messing (2011).
