Pycnotarbus verrucosus was named by Daber (1990). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Karl-Liebknecht-Schact, Zwickau-Olesnitz, which is in a Westphalian D terrestrial shale in Germany. It is the type species of Pycnotarbus.
